I see your point:

for the purposes of enjoying treated discs, the people who use the chip do not need to have a valid explanation of how it works.

The point I'm trying to make is not that the chip is dangerous (I do not think it is), but that people who think it works have no reason to believe it is not dangerous. This is not speculation, just simple logic.

Using the chip involves taking a risk that its mechanism harms them and their housemates. There is plenty of history of things that do harm that takes years to result in symptoms. Failure to drop dead immediately after using the chip is no comfort. It takes a long time to die from bone cancer.
