I owned the Tascam DA-20mkII for a couple months and really liked it. Truthfully, I bought it for pure enjoyment. I am not a musician, so I did not buy it for a studio. Rather, I bought it as a novel way to make mixes from CDs. DAT allows you to make a 2-hour mix at full CD resolution without even having to flip sides, as with an analog cassette. I really like that aspect of DAT. However, since the DAT format offers practically no pre-recorded material, one can basically use it for recording only. Unfortunately, I did not have much time to use the DAT deck to make mixes, so I sold it on eBay. The DA-20mkII is a great deck. The sound quality using its DAC is excellent. I bought it for $675 from Oade Bros. last November. Given my experience with this Tascam unit and the fact that you are willing to spend up to $1600 for a deck, I am sure the higher-end Tascam decks would prove suitable. I believe there is a DA-30mkII and a DA-40. Truthfully, I sometimes miss the Tascam DAT deck. It's a very good quality machine.
