I used to have a Fostex R8 which was the 1/4" 8 track format 15 ips, so it was theoretically the same width per track. It made some nice recordings. I replaced it with a bunch of ADATs but transferred my Analog tapes to ADAT before the R8 went away. I listened to some of those tape transfers recently and can certainly say that the well recorded stuff sounded perfectly acceptable. The R8 was factory biased for Ampex 457, but it got a "fatter" sound with 456.

I think you'll do fine with this machine. In terms of a console, you'll probably want at least 24 channels. I would get a used Mackie or Behringer if you're cost conscious. Get a pair of Neve 1272's or API 312's from Brent Averill if you have the money left over and just use the Mackie for monitoring.
