Guitar Amp questions

205.188.116.7

I just bought a guitar not too long ago. I need to get an Amplifier, or so I am thinking. I listened to a few combo amps at a local store a few days ago. None of them sounded any better than my current set-up on the clean channel. My current set up is, A Yamaha CA-1010 Amp(90 watts @ 8 ohms, Yamaha DSP-100 preamp (pre amp and effects)and either Phase Tech 7T's or Paradigm Mini Monitors as the speakers. Now the problem is that once in a while I might want to have a bit of distortion and there is no way I can get that from my current set up. I am afraid to buy a distortion Peddle, because the 2 that I tried out in the store sounded like "solid-state" distortion. Without breaking the bank, were can I find a valve based distortion peddle? Should I just save up a few bucks and buy a preamp instead? I am a bit confused....
