I know I've said this before in a different application, but try a Presonus Blue Tube ($99.00) most anywhere.
It's a nice little stereo tube preamp that uses a pair of 12AX7's, one for each channel, to give you a little preamp. It has balanced and unbalanced outs on it, so it can be used as a direct box for later recording efforts.http://www.presonus.com/
