Interestingly, most guitar players (and I am one and have been for thirty plus years) use a solid state overdrive or distortion device along with a tube amp.

If you want a smooth tube overdrive sound, buy a low powered tube amp and play it cranked. That way you get the output tubes to overdrive, too.

For a good, basic guitar amp, the second poster gave you a good list to think about. I know a guy who designs and sells tube amp kits. He has some nice-sounding 7 watters. He also sells fully assembled amps that are boutique quality at low prices. Check out this link:
