Re: microphone advice

Pick up a Rode NTK tube mic, it lists for $595 and can be had for $499 just about any where, new out this year. Nothing alse comes close, check out their website www.rodemicrophones.com. This mic is incredible, I own one so I'm not blowin smoke. Stacks up easily to a Neumann U 147 tube mic, actually you'll probably like it better based on your saying you are going for that crisp and warm Cat Stevens sound. That other advice you got about the Beatles recordings is false, the majority of their vocals were recorded with a Neumann M50 (no longer in production) small diaphragm condenser. Later
recordings, remember that funny looking mic on a thin stem that they used on Let It Be, Hey Jude , etc. that was an AKG C28 (also no longer in
production) but you could get a similar response with the AKG 535EB with your tube mic pre, street price about $239. It also makes for abouta killer live vocal condenser. I've seen it used live by Sting , James Taylor, KD Lang, BeeGees, Whitney Houston ...tons of top end featured vocalists, it must not be by accident, forget about a ShureBeta 87, the AKG is way more balanced across the frequency range without the over biased hi end.
