Well you are right in one respect, Cat Stevens sounds like Cat Stevens. No microphone substitutes for poor vocal performance or voice quality. The Beatles vocal sound is out of your price bracket. All their vocals were recorded on vintage Neuman valve mics, selling second hand for about 7,000 - 8,000 Dollars. Nothing wrong with your 57, although 58's are good too, (listen to vocals by Bowie and alike, many of those recorded on 58's) Good cheap condenser is C1000 AKG and it would be well within your budget. Apart from that Neuman U87 seccondhand might just be within your reach, but beware they can need a fair amount of maintainance.Roland
