That's exactly what I was looking for, when I tried to see into the PS with my flashlight. (I've drilled a lot of extra holes for ventilation, so it's no problem.) I was trying to see whether there were 2 FWBs in there or only one, as I remember. Indeed, I see only one FWB, and this served to stimulate my memory re grounding the center tap. (The chassis is full of parts, so not much room for another FWB made of hexfreds, anyway.) My preamp per se is from the early 90's and was a MK I (or whatever terminology was used for the early units) before I got ahold of it; maybe that's the key to the oddity. In a week or two I will have it apart and can then directly confirm my hypothesis (and my memory). I could be in the wrong, too. I guess the point is that one COULD derive a bipolar supply in the way that I described. For example, that's how it's done in my MA240s (which are on MA2 chassis with MA2 trafos) for the HV supply.
