The Rozenblit book is titled, Beginner's Guide to Tube Audio Design. It is published by the Audio Amateur Press of Peterborough, New Hampshire. While it contains basic explanations of tube operation free of mathmatics, it also is focused on design, comprises several old articles from Glass Audio, and has 25 pages of advertising.I have not reviewed the book for errors, so cannot recommend it for beginners. I will note in fairness that Rozenblit makes Transcendent OTL amps, and in 1999 dismissed the Tomcik article in an Audio Asylum posting. It is not clear to me that he understands the physics behind critical damping.
Old college text books can be found in thrift stores in towns with old colleges. While these are dry and mathematical, they are generally reliable and usually cost about $1 or less.
jef, the basic problem here is the people with the most knowledge usually have little time to formulate their thoughts in terms that beginners can understand. Leaving out all the math and inserting folksy phrases makes the text look inviting, but is unsatisfying or dangerously incomplete. As Lew says, it is a good thing that tube rolling is difficult beyond simple brand substitutions.
