I guess this is consistent with Ralph's posting. Prior to discovering the existence of Atma-sphere amplifiers and the wonders of the circlotron, I listened happily for 25 years to a wide variety of Futterman-type OTLs, including several pairs of monoblocks built for me by Julius himself. The Transcendant is naught but a latter-day version of same, albeit with some apparent improvements. (I say "apparent" because I have never had the opportunity to listen to a pair of Transcendant amps, but I have seen the schematic as published by B Rozenblitt.) And by this I do not mean to denigrate either Futterman or Rozenblitt. The former was an innovative genius and the latter is very clever. Futterman amps were at their best when driving KLH 9 ESLs, which had a made-in-heaven impedance curve for tube amps, starting at ca 30 ohms in the bass and falling only to ca 16 ohms at mid-treble frequencies. But no matter how "power"-ful, they never sounded really "good" driving magnepans or Martin-Logan spkrs of many types that I owned, except maybe the CLS-I, which was the CLS before M-L ruined it by lowering the impedance to favor ss designs. My total of 30 years experience with OTLs of both types tells me not to use them with ANY spkr that goes much below 8 ohms for much of its bandwidth. If you must do so, use an impedance matching device, like Zeros or Z Music Transformers. But don't give up on the amplifiers just to accomodate a certain spkr. OTLs have magic when properly applied.
