I never hear that precisely, just the far away echo effect from the perspective chosen by the original engineers, such as Robert Fine for merc and Lew Layton for rca.The original shaded dogs often aren't all that much better vs. white dog or Victrola (sometimes purpose Victrola is very good), and unless you get an excellent condition one without scratches, it's better if you like the music and/or performance of same to buy the SA-CD, imho (Heresy, yes to vinyl asylum guys, which is what I am).
Same goes for original Mercury LP's. I for one like the Golden Imports in most titles, and that's just the time period that I was buying my own records and not for the family. The surfaces are much superior, allowing less distraction.
The RBCD Mercury records I own are 2 of the F. Fennell/Eastman band records and they are intense. Not very bright, just a shade.
