"The highest quality is a concern of the minority"

I couldn't agree more. Most college kids in my day listened to music on cheap portable record players, which consisted a record player and two cheap speakers. We forget how bad those sounded. Most put the record player in the closet when they left college and never took it out. I doubt those players sounded any better than an Ipod.

What has changed is the emergence of the hard drive as a source. There will always be a minority that is willing to pay for high qualtiy sound. But when the kids of my son's generation (he's 15) become adults and decide that they want something that sounds better than an Ipod, they will not be buying VPI turntables or Wadia CD players. They will be looking for a high quality music server to plug into their amps. Enough of those kids will want higher quality sound to make this a very profitable market both for the servers and for lossless downloads. Except for Linn (20K computer), and the very low end products I do not know of any companies that are serving the hardware portion of this market. The fact that the software portion is out there is actually very encouraging for the future of recorded music.
