They share a common set of power amps and speakers, but apart from that are completely independent, including separate pre amps. For 2ch listening, i have a 2 channel analog preamp (MF A3.2cr). This is used for 2ch SACD, CD, 2ch DVD-Audio, LP and cassette tape.
For m-ch listening, i have an analog 5.1 preamp (Sony TA-P9000ES). This is used only for SA-CD and DVD-Audio.
For HT, i have a surround processor (Cary Cinema 6). This is only used for digital sources (DVB-T HDTV receiver, DVD player, HTPC).
Through clever switching (my power amps can switch between dual input sources) and a passive bypass on the TA-P9000ES, I can listen on any preamp with the other preamps turned off.
The HT system is actually configured for 7.1 listening, but i've downgraded it to 5.1 for the time being because there aren't that many 6.1 or 7.1 movie soundtracks and i've used the extra power amp to bi-amp the front speakers. Eventually I need to get another power amp for the surround back speakers and re-enable 7.1.
Neither time alignment or bass management settings are active under any circumstances (the speakers are approximately equidistant +/- 5%). The subwoofer is only used when there is an active LFE (0.1) signal present in the source. I also do NOT engage any electronic room correction or equalisation whatsoever. I experimented with digital room correction on my HTPC, but decided it's not for me.
