It might be that the EQ curve that was set on the current playback gear doesn't match with the curve that was recorded on the tape. The reference test tones tape might be misplaced. Usually the tapes of that vintage is among the more durable formulation than the tapes in the 1970's onward, so it's unlikely that something happens to the tape, unless they keep it in really bad environment.
