Executive Summary: Vinyl wins. Record was more alive and had better defined bass than my SACD. SACD had slightly better trebble.Discussion: I listened first to my record. I've probably only listened to this record once or twice in twenty years.
I'm the original owner and treated it with LAST. Has only been played on good (but not great) equipment. Originally owned an AR turntable, then a $500 Thorens, and now a $800 Rega.
Played the record first and listened to about 10 minutes of the record. I thought to myself: not bad, but I don't think its as good as the SACD. Also hate those pops and noise that occurs between songs. (Frankly, I mainly was focusing on the trebble.)
I then played the SACD. It sounded flat. Didn't have as much life. Not a huge difference, but noticable to anyone in my opinion. I also noticed that the bass seemed loose and not as well defined.
I listened to 10 minutes, switched back to the record for 10, and then back to the SACD. Same opinion.
The SACD does not have the pops and may have slightly better defined trebble which may be due to record wear. I'm sure that I've played this record more than 50 times. Or it may be because I "only" have a $800 turnttable with a $200 cartridge.
I also have a theory about the bass. My first tape player was reel to reel. I've noticed that after recording something that in a couple years, the bass seems to loose definition. It's been almost 40 years the Lost Chord master was created. It may have deteriorated. They may have done better if they found an unplayed record and created a new master from that record.
Bottomline: The SACD version is better than the CD and is far more convenient than vinyl. I'm still pleased with the SACD.
Additional Thoughts: The Days of Future Passed SACD is superior to the Last Chord SACD. The bass is well defined which decredits my theory that the master tape has deteriorated after almost 40 years.
