I enjoy talking about MCH music and your post gave me an opportunity to do so. Part of the problem is how it is marketed - even at the high end. You are the second person on this forum to mention that the million dollar room was a million dollar flop. Your assessment, which I'm sure I would agree with, is probably based on a bias towards music, as opposed to HT reproduction. If I was selling high-end MCH components I wouldn't be selling to audiophiles. I'd go where the money is. I'd sell to wealthy people who want a high dollar HT room in their house. When you listen to my system, if you are aware of sound coming from the rear speakers - usually something is wrong!! And I'm reaching for the remote to lower the rear speaker volume.
In contrast, if I was demo-ing an HT system - I'd want people to hear the rears. This applies to music as well. I suspect its much easier to sell $50K worth of music components as an add-on to a guy buying a $500,000 to $1,0000,000 dollar home theatre system , than it is to sell those same components to an audiophile. Chances are the guy buying the HT system is going to be more impressed with " big, all-around sound", than the subtle details of presentation.
So you went to the demo and walked away disappointed. But the guys who install high-end HT equipment were probably taking notes.
All of this is out-and-out speculation. But as someone who enjoys MCH music, I'm a niche within a niche. No one is going to make money selling to me.
