There is a strong group of audiophiles convinced that sacd stereo sounds no better than cd stereo in the high-end gear, and a much bigger group of music-lovers who can't hear the advantage on their gear. It's a little like hdcd... few can hear the advantage, it's on a downhill slide. The result is that some record companies are skipping the sacd stereo track altogether, and promoting hybrid sacd with just a mch track. And it sells.
The beauty of mch sacd is that you can configure your system with 2 or 3 speakers up-front, and 0 or 2 surround speakers, and a sub or not, and everyone can select the configuration they prefer.
The beast of mch sacd is that stereo-only players are still selling, which locks out their owners from mch. Arguably, stereo only sacd players are medium to high end only, so their owners also have good CD playback (the trend is for good stereo cd and sacd playback in one unit), so they can listen to the CD layer, or afford a mch player... the potential loss of revenue for the record companies is small.
If you're a newbie today, spending equal $ on either a stereo or mch system, you can probably get a better sonic experience from the mch setup. mch capable components for a total investment similar to stereo components, will not be significantly less quality.
Of course, if you have an investment in stereo that you cannot enhance with additional channels (for various reasons), then mch is not an option.
mch is taking over the industry, slowly, for music and movies and TV, hi hirez and compressed formats. CD will never die, but stereo hirez formats don't have a bright future.
As for me, I have a couple of sacd that are scratched such that only the stereo track is useable... my enjoyment of those sacd has dropped significantly, the music is not as involving as it used to be... I'll end up buying the disks again for the mch track.
all statements are my opinion, in respect of all readers.
