I agree with Pacman...

Using the "rears" for ambience or effect can be very pleasing if done properly.

I also think setup has something to do with it. The rears in my MC setup can almost be considered "sides" instead. They are just barely behind the plane of my head. They tend to set up soundfields to the left and right of the front soundfield and not so much the rear. The overall effect with many mixes is a very wide, deep, and continuous horsehoe shaped sound field which does not sound unnatural with a lot of pop/rock. If you look at the suggested SACD speaker setups (aka Sony), there are no sound sources directly behind the listener, they are to the side and slightly behind.
