I used a pair of Sennheiser 580s for about 12 years before making a jump on upgrading headphones. Tried a pair of HE-500's driven by a Headroom Desktop amp, and wasn't too impressed. For me, the gains were not enough over the Sennheisers to justify the price.
Out of random trial and error, I bought the LCD-2s and was blown away. It was love on first hearing... voices came out of a silent background and sounded ridiculously realistic, detailed and smooth. This is the LCD-2 rev 2s, bought right before the bamboo rev3 came out.
Seeing others' responses, I guess it shows how different each's preferences are. The headphones are not light, but I also would say they're very comfortable and I wear them for hours at a time without complaint. They are also very sturdy and do not show any signs of wear and tear. And in my set-up, I actually think they are not dark at all... they are pretty even from top to bottom, and may have a slightly accentuated midrange. I'd actually prefer a bit more bottoom oomph, who knows, maybe it's my amp?
I highly, highly recommend it.
