Re: So, there *was* an analog safety backup made?

>>I was thinking of studio economics, that's all. Doing a full analog safety backup for all sessions would have required an additional person, and even more time (=money) to index the tapes to the digital equivalents. And you and I know how stingy producers are! :-) <<

Indeed. It would be very expensive, and a real PITA too! Most of the digital pioneers who were nervous contented themselves with an analog safety of the digital master, but some may have been more nervous than others. The multi-track DASH machines were brand-new, just introduced, when Dire Straits went into the studio to record BIA. There were a few well-known digital disasters back then. Doesn't really matter, since we're just indulging in speculation. Only Martin has his ego on the line for this discussion. :-)

I'm mildly curious as to the provenance of the analog multi Ainlay used. Could have been a dub, could have been an original. Mildly curious, but not curious enough to find out, because AFAIC it doesn't make any difference whatsoever. "Digital purity" is Martin's weird thing, not mine. ;-) Maybe he'll get worked up enough to go find out for us, but I think he'd rather just sulk and cast aspersions.

>>Yes, yes, yes, but I've been told there's an additional benefit if the *same* machine was used to playback the digital recording. And that benefit can be quite significant.<<

Sorry, I thought you were talking about analog multis, not digital multis. I think you're correct on this; however, it's often a difficult thing to do, because the early tape-based machines got obsoleted pretty quickly, as do all things digital. Lots of tape-based digital machines still around, but not too many of the really early ones. Ainlay has a DASH machine, but it's a 48-tracker, and they didn't come out until 1990 or so. If the original BIA multi was digital, I doubt that he had the same machine it was recorded on.
