Thanks for the post; your thoughts make a lot of sense to me. In particular, the description of the decoder as the circuitry that uncompresses/unpacks MLP makes me think that, at least on my cheap player, the decoder MUST be able to handle 192kHz MLP without downsampling. Otherwise, it wouldn't be able to send the unpacked bitstream at 192kHz to the coax output. And this means that the digital stream can't be tapped prior to the decoder as I speculated in my previous post.Maybe my Panny and the Pioneer mentioned elsewhere in the thread are exceptions? Hopefully, we'll see more from Jazz. This is really a straightforward empirical question and I assume that he has a source for some hard data to support his assertions - though maybe he's guilty of overgeneralizing about the decoders found in inexpensive players.
