Thanks for the clarification. But I ain't a techie and am a bit confused. So a couple of questions...I'm not familiar with the term "decoder"; is it a separate component from the DAC? And at what point in a player's circuitry is the signal for the digital ouput tapped?
I use a Panasonic S47 as a PCM transport for DVD-V and unprotected DVD-A based on Benchmark Media's finding that it outputs full 192/24 from its coaxial output. At US$80, this player certainly fits your "under $200" criterion for a cheap unit. So, can I assume that the digital signal is directed to the output before arriving at the decoder and, subsequently, the DAC? And the signal that emerges from the decoder is 48/24 which is what is seen by the DAC?
I guess it makes conceptual sense - there's no need to decode a signal that's going to another decoder. But where in the signal path does the SW copy-code kick in (on any player, cheap or otherwise) to tell it to send a hi-res signal to the DAC but not to the digital output? This would have to be before the decoder on my unit if the decoder itself is incapable of handling a 192kHz bitstream without downsampling. Is there yet another component in there that handles this function?
I'm pretty new to this hi-res stuff but am getting there. I appreciate your taking the time to further enlighten me!
