There are often problems when you don't use an integer multiple of the original sample rate. The math does matter. It isn't -simply- a matter of Nyquist and bandwidth.But that depends on how picky you are.
44.1 into 88.2 is going to be cleaner than using an algorithm that takes it up to 96. There are various reasons for this, but one of the effects is similar to having two PCM devices mis-clocked.
