Looking to switch tubes in Freya+ Pre Amp. Any Suggestions? Do the PSVANE 6SN7 Tennis Balls sound as good as they look? Thanks.
Follow Ups:
I have Psvane CV-181 mk2 (6SN7 equivalent) tubes that followed with an amp I bought. They are big and look elegant. The sound is very smooth and sweet but timbre is unnatural. Maybe good for those who want a very relaxing sound but not for realism in music.
My Soviet 6H8C from the 1960's sound better or go for the US NOS tubes recommended above.
Interested in this topic as I own a Freya + and am currently using Sylvania tubes.
Has anyone used 6 SL7's and how did they compare to 6SN7's.
It is generally not recommended to use other tube types than the device is designed for, other than direct or close equivalents.
Sure, you can get a different sound because of changed frequency response etc. But it is almost certainly colored. In some cases the device can work with more than one tube type but that is usually mentioned in the manual.
Randomly trying different tubes can in worst case damage the amp.
The manual states that the Freya will accommodate 6SL7, which is the reason for my question.
I get what you're saying,just curious.
What kind of sound do you want?
Head banging, bass heavy metal? I'd suggest KenRad.
Jazz, vocals and small ensemble? RCA gray glass.
Something more full spectrum? Just about any Sylvania.
I never tried PSVANE 6SN7, but if the character of them is anything like their 12AX7 I couldn't recommend. Their overpriced 12AX7 sounded bloody awful. Mud. Very thick and slow sounding.
It's people like you who drive up NOS 6SN7 prices! :)
Thank goodness, I have my boxes of'em already.
Also try Soviet vintage 6H8C from the 50s or 60s, which can still be found for little money on eBay. You'd probably be surprised at how good they sound!
N.
I would look for NOS (or ANOS) 6SN7's. I don't even know if the tennis balls would fit in a Freya+ without a socket extender as the tube sockets are well below the chassis. FWIW, I've had my best success with the already mentioned NOS or ANOS 6SN7's.
