Older style potentiometers have a round metal outer case which always has a gap or opening where the terminal wafer is located; use the spray can nozzle extender to apply a bit of special electronic control cleaner thru this opening to the innards & rotate control back & forth several times to swipe internal surfaces clean. Newer plastic encased controls may be sealed, making DIY cleaning difficult or impossible. Never attempt to apply cleaner via the shaft bushing; that will not succeed & may flush shaft lubricant making control difficult to turn.
