Re: 12AU7 Tubes

It is hard to make a recommendation without knowing what sort of sound you are after. I have heard a LARGE number of 12au7 types. I generally agree with what has been said so far, but there are other very good tubes not mentioned. If you want something slightly warmer, but still very detailed try either the CBS 5814 or the Raytheon 5814 - both need to be pre-1960. (the 5814 is a 12au7 equivalent that will work anywhere a 12au7 will) The earlier the better. Both are great tubes and may float your boat. I find them to be a bit more detailed in the high end and "faster" sounding than Mullards, yet they retain that wonderful rich sound. "Lush, but not mush" as fellow inmate tvr2500m once put it. I find the German tubes to be very "clinical" in my system. Of course, your tastes may be completely different. I have a pair of the vaunted Siemens chrome plates and they are not among my favorites, but others swear by them. The Amperex are very nice tubes as well. Another fine tube is the tungsol black glass 12au7. The tungsol is pretty flat in its response and you may like that. I prefer a slightly warmer tube and use a pair of 1951 Rayteon 5814's and would say the CBS 5814 from the early to mid 1950's is my second favorite. Anyway, the early Raytheons are a little harder to find, but the CBS are quite common and can be had for under $50 a pair usually if you hunt around and watch ebay.... The early 1960's organ tubes are also a good deal and can often be had for little money as suggested earlier. Lastly, read the archives, a search for "best 12au7" will turn up tons of threads and many tube descriptions.....Good luck.
