Re: Microphonic tube question

A microphonic tube is one that acts as a microphone. It happens if the electrode are not particularly well supported internally, especially if the tube base is rigid. If a microphonic tube is touched or subject to vibrations while in use, it generates electronic signals which may be heard through the rest of the system, behaving like a condenser microphone. If you tap the tube with your fingernail, you can hear a sound like a bell from the speakers. In extreme cases, even sound waves from the speakers can set it off, a form of accoustic feedback. The microphonic sensitivity depends not only upon the tube's characteristics but also whereabouts it is in the circuit and how much gain follows it.

However, microphony cannot happen if the tube is inactive. What you are hearing is cross-talk from some other source, such as capacitive or inductive leakage between channels. It has nothing to do with the microphonic tube.
