The sonic signature of the EH tubes is completely opposite from Mullards. The EH have a lot of top end energy, the Mullards don't. So yes, the difference is "staggering". It's NOT necessarily quality, it's voicing that is so different (and I'm not saying the EH are equal to the Mullards in quality).The SED EL34 is the most Mullard-like tube I know of.
Others here have mentioned the JJ KT77. There was a problem with small diameter pins that apparently is fixed, but many have forgotten there were numerous other problems as well. So it still can be a bit of a crapshoot IMHO. If it was me I'd give them some more time to refine the KT77. I will say the GZ34 I received recently was much better than 6 months ago, which bodes well for the future.
My recommendation is the EL34 SED, they'll give you a fine Mullard-like tone for a fraction of the price.
