I dearly love the EAT/Tesla Vrsovice KT88. Much more than even 1960s Genalex KT88s. Impossible, you say? NO. The EAT/Teslas, made not in Slovakia like the JJ slag, are from the Chenetz transmitting plant in Czech Republic. They sound like an EL34 crossed with a 1960s Tung Sol 6550. Best tube (sonically) made in 25 years. Unfortunately, they are unreliable. Yet, and this is the real point, they are ABSOLUTE PROOF that tube manufacturers COULD INDEED make great tubes today if the market demanded it. Guitar amp makers are satisfied (and even some hifi folks) with the standard definition of a "great" tube; quiet and can take lots of abuse. I think they need to sound good, too. Call me crazy. Now, as I hear it, one or two men funded the introduction of JJ kt77--great tube if the pins are right--- so what would it take to approach Shuguang, who already makes the two best KT88s on the market, and say--- "Make these KT88/EL34 as good as the Tianjin mesh 300Bs" They could do it. They just need to be PAID. The time will come when audiophiles will set up "buyers clubs" to get runs of 1000 KT88 Shuguangs for a decent price. Russian and JJ tubes pale in comparison to not just the EAT/Tesla Vrsovice KT88, but the Shuguang as well-- and from SuperTNT.com the Shuguang GEC copy is $85/quad! For further proof that great modern tubes can be made, Look at the Ei KT90; when VTL pumped the $ into the production and supervised, that was a bomb-ass tube. It may be time for audiophiles to DEMAND a better tube; pay for it, and not just settle for shite tubes and hope they get better. I'm sick of transistor in a bottle sonics. To quote a movie: "I'm not gonna take it anymore!" A custom run of 1000 KT88s CAN'T run much more than $50/tube fro Shuguang; explicit contracts stating that the tubes WOULD have to pas spec, be reliable, and even better than their great KT88-98s and GEC copy KT88s.
