Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Let me ask this

Hi Russ,

I would probably go for a Cit V type design first. That is somewhere between a "typical pentode class AB1 global feedback vintage amp" and the Cit II. Since I would never use a set of Cit II OPTS except on a Cit II, I have to look at the limits imposed by the OPT situation. Those aren't exactly off the shelf parts! And honestly, doing a Cit II from scratch would be tough unless I just copied it - I'm not sure I'm smart enough to use Stu Hegeman's approach on another amp if I have to start with a clean white sheet of paper!

Eli Duttman and I worked together to put together the "El-Cheapo" bargain basement amp that is written up over on the Decware site. Eli did much of the work, I chipped in some here and there - but I wouldn't change a thing Eli did (plus he's a smart cookie)! I did suggest the 12AT7 tube as the driver/PI tube. That will drive some folks crazy, because you don't have to search hard to find plenty of post saying the 'AT is a lousy audio tube. It has too much 2nd order distortion - which is exactly why I spec'd it out. The reason for me saying that is to point out that I don't like to do things the conventional way just because I can.

Also, I have (8) AVVT 300Bs sitting in my stash, just waiting for the day when I get time to build an SE amp. That's the same reasons I have about the same number of VT-4Cs...

I know, I'm all over the place. But with a few exceptions I prefer simple to complex, I have nothing against NFB PROPERLY used, I like voltage doublers (it allows low DCR secondary windings), I have nothing against tube rectifiers but for power stages I prefer SS - using good diodes.

I dunno, did I ever really answer your question? I tried, if I didn't maybe I can't!

Feel free to put me on the spot - I always enjoy hearing your views Russ.
