Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Hey, Kevin, get a load of this :-)

I called up Rick at Allegro, who's clearly a very smart, very opinionated guy. He says (true or not) that he doesn't actually know who the original manufacturer was. That may be true, since somebody in an old Audiogon ad said he thought these tubes were once sold by a company called Gold Aero that tested, graded and relabelled NOS tubes. Anyway, what Rick says is that back in the mid-'70s he went on a quest for the best 12AX7 tube, buying some of every brand he could get his hands on. After listening extensively to the whole collection, he picked these tubes as the best. In 1978 he was able to corner the market on nearly every single one of these tubes (by buying out Gold Aero, who had already rebranded them?). To make them distinctively his and prevent any further rebranding, he sandblasted the tubes, frosted them, put his name on, and plated the pins. He's been selling them ever since with a money back guarantee. He says that since 1978 no one who has bought these tubes from him has ever asked for their money back.
