PaulWhilst the Romulus Pre section is by no means bad, it can be bettered, even CR recognise this and consider their own pre's to offer a sonic advantage & the Pre inputs to allow an upgrade path. As for the MiniMax this is a very good pre and punches well above it's weight. I rejected several SH offerings from the likes of ARC & CJ at over twice the price. But one clear advantage of the MiniMax is it's ability to use a very wide selection of tubes and thus fine tune the sound to your needs. It all really depends of the amount you want to spend and the level of versatility required.
Personally, I don't think older Pre's will offer that much of a sonic advantage and would look to putting the resources into a more up-to-date phono stage.
