A SET amp has a certain sound that is more a function of its circuit than the tube used. One only needs to look at the growing number of SET amps using pentodes and the like (even if they are triode strapped).By definition almost all tube preamps are SET designs. The only thing different that you are suggesting is using directly heated tubes instead of indirectly heated tubes. Many DIYers do build preamps with directly heated tubes and claim superior results. Extra care must be taken to avoid him. I doubt you will see many commercial offerings due to the fact that most of the suitable tubes are no longer made.
So no, I don't think building a preamp with a directly heated triode(s) will give you the SET magic. But I do think any well built tube preamp, including one built with directly heated triodes, will make a positive improvment in the sound quality from a solid state amp. In particular I would say the tube preamp will help in the soundstage and in reduction of fatiguing highs. So I do encourage you to try one. But don't think you will be buying a sugar coated tone control device as any tube design that sounds that way is either broke, worn out, or poorly designed.
