By all means, the Grey Glass WWII vintage RCA VT-231's or 6sn7gt will give you the qualities you are looking for. A very soft romantic sounding tube, although I not sure what you mean by "dark". The RCA sounds slightly rolled off which gives the midrange a slightly soft, somewhat "out of focus" sound. Tung-sol is much faster, more extended and more detailed (but not hard). Nice thing is that the RCA is cheaper and certainly more plentiful. The Brimar CV1988 would also fall into this catagory, but it is not as soft sounding as the RCA.
