The key word in your description of what you wanted was "dark". The Tung Sol round plate VT-231/6SN7GT has a very sweet and detailed sound, but does have a dark sound that is not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak. However, if you're looking for dark and sweet, you won't find another tube that matches both of those criteria as well as the Tung Sol. Those are where it excels.Ken-Rads are sweet, and are bass monsters (staggered plate version), but do not have a particularly dark sound. RCA's are strong in the midrange, but roll the highs and lows a bit too much for me. Most Sylvania's would not be called anywhere near "dark". The exception would be some of the Syl 6SN7W's (black or metal base). Some of these are dark, and others are bright in the same gear (which can sound rather strange if both kinds are mixed together). I have yet to figure out how to tell which is which with any confidence, other than by listening to them. A dark-sounding set of the 6SN7W's would compete, and perhaps surpass the Tung Sol's at meeting your criteria. I don't know how to tell if a 6SN7W would sound dark prior to purchase, however. Nothing that my testers (B&K 747 and Heathkit TT-1A) can reveal gives a clue.
