Exemplar Denon 2900

The Exemplar-modded Denon 2900 players are going for less than $2000 used, as people rush to upgrade to the 3910. Extremely strong performer, and is faster and cleaner than my Wadia 301 on redbook, with gorgeous mids, and very quick and coherent low end. I use pinch-waist E180CC tubes (Holland made, but under several brands) that are the best sounding tubes I've found for the player so far.

This is a universal player, but I regard SACD and DVD-A as a bonus feature (even though that is where this player is a true monster). My primary digital listening is redbook, but IMO it's going to take a significant increase in $$ to get better redbook performance than the Exemplar Denon.

The only downside is that it's single-ended only, which rules it out if you need a balanced source (although used pricing on the 3910, which can be configured as balanced, can sometimes meet your budget criteria). A friend of mine who's owned both likes the sonics of the Exemplar Denon 2900 as much or more than the Exemplar Denon 3910 if you don't need a balanced out.
