In Reply to: Used tube CD players: for under $2000, what's the most musical and most real sounding? posted by hukkfinn on April 4, 2006 at 05:39:53:
I had owned the Unico CD for 3 months and was quite under whelmed to say the least. It has a nice tight bass, but was overall not very engaging. I found it overall quite lifeless with a slightly tilted up top-end (if used with the Jan tubes). It did not provide the same kind of resolution and inner detail that my Audio Aero Prima brings out. Mullard tubes did change the sound somewhat, reducing the bright top end, but also reducing the dynamics further. The Audio Aero Prima is a much better in my opinion. I have compared the Prima to the Unison Unico CDP, the Linn Genki, and Original Rega Planet, which I all owned for an extended period of time. The Prima walks a very fine line providing a very smooth and warm, but very detailed and direct sound. So far I have not heard a single player that portrayed instruments (piano and sax) as realistic as the Prima. The only shortcoming I have noticed is the bass, which could be just a tad quicker. I have not heard the Ah! or the Cary though.
As others mentioned I would also take the new Rega Apollo into consideration, although I have not been able to listen to it in my own system though.Good luck,
Rene
