Siemens are the best, in my systems anyway. High detail, nice airy highs, tight bass--a very uncongested sound that is not harsh in any way.Mullards can be great in some applications, but, in general, I find them most useful to tame something that is overly bright. They do have the lushest midrange.
Telefunkens are a weird beast. I have found that in some circuits they sound bright, some dark and some just right.
Amongst the american stuff, I like Tung-Sol, Raytheon black plate and RCA black plate. Sylvanias prior to 1975 are nice too. GEs can also work well, very neutral and balanced.
Although I am sure this will meet with a lot of disagreement, I am not an Amperex fan. I have found them to be compressed and sibilant.
