....the stock Tube Box tubes are apparently Electro Harmonix that are relabeled "Pro-Ject" and I used those for the first couple of months. I was mightily impressed by the Tube Box as it made my previous solid state phono stage sound...well, solid state. My local dealer carries Pearl cryo'd tubes so I decided to try a pair of Sovtek 12ax7lps. The Pearl tubes are burned in for 100 hours ( to eliminate potential "infant mortals"...thier words, not mine!) tested for noise and microphonics and then cryo'd. The Sovteks were immediately more transparent and lively, with leaner bass and actually a more "solid state" sound, but not in a bad way. Of course the differences were much more subtle than switching from SS to tubes or vice versa, but apparent nonetheless.
I recently installed an unlabeled pair of JJ Tesla ECC-83s which were identified by an "inmate" (thanks TubeMonger). These have been the best so far...sounding smoother all around and with better extension in both directions, especially the treble. Once again, these differences subtle.
Anywhoo...that's about her for my experience with tubes and tube gear, but I'm sure any future upgrades will involve glass enclosed vaccums!!
