Telefunken and Mullard are the top dawgs (and priced like it!). Old RCAs are very nice too. This is not to say all other tubes are bad.As far as newer tubes, I like the Ei from a few years ago. I bought a dozen for 5 bucks each and wished I would have bought a 100. This is your best buy IMHO. You want ones that are a few years old.
Which tube is best may vary some from equipment to equipment but the general characteristics tend to hold out.
