Count me in as an EL-84 fan. I find it one of the
most consistently pleasurable tubes, which have enough power
to drive something other than extreme efficiency speakers.
Most of my experiance has been from a Leak Stereo 20 (which is
my overwhelming favorite and can even drive Rogers LS3/5A's), a
Dynaco SCA-35, and a Fisher SA-16. All these amps have been
rebuilt and brought up to spec, but I admit they're all quite "vintage".
However, they all sounded better
than their 10-15 watts would imply. I obviously prefer multi hundred
watt tube amps for their ease of presentation while driving my usual
fare of inefficient speakers, but I wish
to one day have a simple life running and being completely satisfied
with an EL-84 amp.Long live the Leak Stereo-20. Until, of course it overheats
and the resistors fall out.
Maybe Mahi monoblocks are in my future...
