I may as well put my two cents worth in here. I second the recommend about the 6201. I have a small stash of the Sylvanias. I also have GE and RCA. The GE five star is good, but the Sylvania is sweeter and quieter in my system. RCA's are fine and seem to have great punch in mid freq's. I've tried an assortment of other 12AT7's (and it's variants) and the Sylvanias seem to be the best IN MY SYSTEM.
Your milage may vary. You might try some JAN 6189's . I got almost all of mine on ebay. Usually around $12 - $15 per tube. Not bad for them. Regular 12AT7's for even less. Got a sleeve of 5 JAN Phillips 12AT7's for $5.54 plus $4.95 shipping once on ebay. Sometimes ya win and sometimes........As for the 12AX7's I have mostly Mullards and RCAs with black plates. I might get tied to the whipping post for saying this but I think that 12AX7s on ebay is a crap shoot. There are so many millions of the 12AX7 out there that there is no telling when you might get lucky and get your hands on some really good ones for very little money. Then again, you could buy some of those "RARE, "selected", premium, holy grail, AX7's and end up with a bunch of noise makers. Fortunately, the 12AX7's are also reasonable enough to afford to get some to try. Plan to swap/sell/trade/loan/toss out about 1 or 2 per dozen.
