There were very few tubes that I've tried in my 11A that I didn't like, if you know what I mean -- just some that sounded better than others. My all time favorite is the Tung-Sol blackplates, but they make the GE 6550s look very reasonable, price wise. Some of my other particular favorites are Genalex KT-88s (probably even more expensive than the Tung-Sols, but very, very good), Ei KT-90 (both type 2 and 3), Penta KT-88SC, Electro-Harmonix KT-88, and probably my next favorite to the original TS 6550 is the reissue made by Sovtek. A matched quad of the reissues would go for around $150 - $160. You don't really need a matched quad with the 11A since each tube is individually biased, but I try to get them matched when I can. Although I haven't heard the Sovtek reissue Tung-Sol 6550 in my 11A, as yet, I have heard them in the 11A's younger and bigger brother the Premier 140 and continue to be extremely impressed with them.Good luck in your quest.
Joe
