In the mid-'70s we had a hi-end dealer in San Diego, Audio Directions. They carried several quality brands of the day, but the owner had derogatory slang terms for most of the mid-fi brands. He called them Sansewage.
In spite of that I had to downsize in the late '70s and I'd read positive reports in a couple of British magazines for Sansui. I ended up buying an AU 717 to drive a pair of used Maggies. That system worked amazingly well. Lately I noticed some of the vintage Sansui components, including the 717, command good money on the used market.
