Joe:I have owned the Super 8s since the beginning of the year and absolutely love them. But the reason I'm responding to your post is to tell you about the guy who introduced me to John DeVore's speakers...
This guy owns one of the most popular concert venues in Atlanta and happens to also deal in high end audio. I called him up about some Von Schweikerts in the fall of '05 and went for a demo. I didn't go for the VR-4jrs, even though I was really excited to hear them, mainly because they lacked the quality of transparency that I'd grown to love with Maggies. Anyway, while I was there I noticed he had some beautiful Avalons sitting on the sidelines of his reference system. He had moved the VSAs to the front for the demo, but I asked him how much they went for and he said they were like $30k. That was my first time seeing speakers in that price range.
When he called me up about the DeVores earlier this year, I stopped over again and pretty much fell in love with them. He told me that he'd herad the Silverbacks at one of the major audio shows and was very impressed, so he figured I'd love the Super 8s since they are sonically very similar, just on a smaller scale. He was right.
What was funny, though, was when I joked around with him about the Silverbacks. He had already ordered a pair from John DeVore and was eagerly awaiting their arrival. When I took delivery on my Super 8s, I said something like, "hey, maybe you'll end up liking the Silverbacks so much that they'll replace your Avalons in your reference system!" Admittedly I said it half jokingly, cause the Silverbacks are less than half of the Avalons, and he was clearly dug into the trenches in terms of how much he loved them.
Well, not long after he received them from Brooklyn, he asked if I wanted to stop over to hear them. Now I hadn't known this guy very long, but I could tell that he was excited. To make a long story less long than I already have, his Avalons have been sitting in a closet for many months now, with those beautiful Silverbacks taking center stage :)
I'm one of those people who would probably still buy a $15-20k car even if I was a millionaire. I've always felt the same way about speakers. I had never imagined coming across a speaker that I'd drop $12k on. Well, that all changed when I heard the Silverbacks. People talk about how they "heard things on their CDs that they'd never heard before" so often on these forums that it's become a cliche. But in this case it was so far beyond that it was nuts. It was like there was no audio gear or speakers at all! Every little detail of music we heard was totally authentic that it was addicting to me.
So anyway, enjoy those big bad monkeys!
