Speaker Recommendation?

128.135.96.224

Hello,

I have been looking through several online FAQ's and reviews, but I admit to being a little overwhelmed by the process of purchasing speakers. I hoped that someone here might be able to help me.

I have recently come into a Pioneer SX-750 (free), and will play mostly CD's and ripped music on a computer through that. I don't have a very fancy soundcard for my computer and there is a small amount noise, but the frequency response is pretty well balanced as far as I can tell on my ATH-A900 headphones. The music I listen to includes rock, jazz, folk, and classical. I prefer a fairly flat response to a bassy sound, though I guess that's mostly because a lot of times the bass sounds muddled on low-quality speakers if it is turned up too high.

I would like to spend no more than $300, and preferably somewhat less. Obviously, I am looking for an option which achieves a reasonably good, tight sound, but am not in the position to go over the top for this. So currently I am looking at bookshelf speakers, and perhaps adding a subwoofer. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks very much in advance. I apologize for such a uneducated question, but buying headphones is much easier than buying speakers, I've found!

Sincerely,

-- Ned Ruggeri
