Classic rock - old cd's vs. new cd's

I have been looking around on the Steve Hoffman site and alot of people over there (including steve himself) seem to feel that the older cd issue of most classic rock albums are the ones to have. The general reason being a straight unadulterated transfer from a tape that is probably not the master (alot of early cd's used "production coppies") will still sound better than what they do to some of the remasters claimed to be from a master tape (i.e noise shapping, compression, digital clipping). One thing I have noticed is hiss is unrelated to whether "noise shapping" was used. My noise shaped Elton John GBYBR 1995 rocket remaster has more hiss than the MCA disc I have. I feel generally that some of the 2nd issues of classic rock cd's were usually an improvement and all issues after no dfference or worse. This is a huge generalization, since some find that cd's of presumably the same mastering but with different matrix numbers sound different. What's your take?
