Re: Ouch!

Yea, it can get pretty bad sometimes and does add a harshness that shouldn't be there. I don't normally like to analyze the sound that much, I mean if it sounds good, then why bother. 10,000 Years is such a great album musically, and I know from visiting their discussion board that the band is happy with the sound, even using the same argument you make about the Beatles and compression when someone asked them why it was so compressed, but it's just too punchy and unnatural sounding to me too. Music has lost most of the nuances it used to have because everything is squashed down to the same level. Hard to believe they don't hear that on the CD. I'll post a link to the same type of Audacity (freeware editor) screen as I did with the Spoon CD down below, this one the beginning of the 10,000 Years title track showing the clipping, just FYI. Not really all that bad since it's only for a few samples, and it isn't done constantly throughout the song, only a few times, but the waveform does spend a lot of time up close to max level, and it is pretty loud and punchy.

But enough negativity for one day. I'm listening to 10,000 Years right now and love it. It may have been written more about WWII, but the songs are very topical for the current times. Much more sophistication in the music and lyrics than most artists are capable of. Too bad it went by almost unnoticed a couple years ago. I did my part and talked about it a lot, including here, but you were about the only response I got back then :-)
