look for Japanese masterings. To my ear and on my system, they sound noticeably and pleasureably smoother and arguably more musical than their domestic counterparts with some exceptions if, as I say, you have the choice. The domestic exceptions are the Prestige catalogue and on the Blue Note and Impulse labels. Also, Verve masterings are outstanding. I can whole heartedly recommed their 1997 release of Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson.
